The Band: How The "Me" Was Won

Adrian claimed recently that Starflyer 59 is the band for him. Perhaps it is. They're quite ok. I on the other hand, found Cursive as solace. But before the Nebraskan quartet, I stumbled upon a video from another American quartet. It was for a song off their second album The Instinct. The enigmatic Hold Your Breath. I was instantly impressed with their dark and brooding dynamics and angular take on a simple 4-piece arrangements. But sadly my discovery was a few months too late. They disbanded in April 2004, leaving two of the most underrated albums in indie rock history (despite the 4-star rating given by AllMusicGuide for both albums) under the belt of their short-lived career. They are the band for me. They were, Denali.

Such beauty, such lush. No other band has manage to capture such a wide array of moods and emotions in one soundscape. This is the person responsible for it. The best frontwoman ever. The insanely talented and lovely, Maura Davis.

She's definitely an epitome of brains-over-beauty. And also a fine example of classical music chick-cum-rock babe supreme. This is my best instinctive musical discovery since The Twilight Singers and My Vitriol. It doesn't get any better than this (Hopefully, it does).

p/s: Happy 20th Zhaf!
